Self Defense Bas Rutten Style

Now Bas Rutten is one funny guy. He is funny but most of his self defense techniques are excellent. And it helps being powerful as well.

  1. I'm glad you posted on my blog. I've read your stuff before but somehow never saved your RSS. That's been fixed! You'll probably see me pushing some of your content in my weekly news feature!

Rutten has some really good self-defense material. I base anything I now learn in my martial arts hobby against my reality days of working in two prisons. His stuff passes the BS test and he's also very entertaining!

  3. He is really funny! :D looks like he is just playing around. His techniques are interesting though. At first sight, I thought this is some kind of a joke but when I watched the video again, I would say that he is impressive. Let me go and practice one technique later.

  4. Bas Rutten is a great martial artist and used to be one of the best in MMA. I have his self defense DVD and these are my findings:

    1) he uses a lot of wrestling type strength moves that can only be pulled off by someone as big and powerful as himself, not very useful for most of us who are likely to face bigger and stronger opponents and who don’t have the time to get pumped up at the gym.

    2) his comments about the nature of streetfighting and the danger of weapons are sound and he obviously speaks from experience here.

    3) he shares the usual flaw with most MMA types: in SD don’t dive to the ground to execute that fancy kneebar, at least not when you like breathing or being able to walk. Also he seems to be promoting excessive violence and a fighting attitude (as opposed to a defensive, cautious one) that could very well land you in trouble with the boys in blue due to the nature of self defense laws.

    4) I applaud that he uses krav maga material for his knife and gun defenses and doesn’t try to make something up in order to be ‘original’, on top of that he gives credit where credit is due and doesn’t claim to be an expert on weapons just because he fought in the ring.

Conclusion: the guy is obviously a great fighter and very funny but his material is not very useful for the average joe looking to learn some good, simple self defense. Might be good when you’re a strong guy who has some wrestling or MMA background but chances are you will already know this stuff since it’s little more than standard kickboxing & wrestling/submission moves performed in a bar.

  5. I'm not athletic or very flexible, but I'm hoping to learn some self defense. Is there one that will be able to give me some skill in the art, but will not be too demanding in the beginning? I've heard that most forms of self-defense require a minimum level of fitness in the beginning.

  6. Aside from being physically fit, most forms of self defense require strict discipline and mental awareness. This may sound too demanding but you may benefit a lot from knowing how to protect yourself.
